ACS-A worked in collaboration with PETRONAS Research Sdn Bhd and other partners to develop a composite clamp for the repair of leaking oil and gas pipelines.
The project involved extensive design and finite element analysis work to develop a composite repair clamp which comprised two half shell sections which are bolted in position around the pipe and a specially designed sealing system to provide the means for leak and pressure containment.
ACS-A also developed a method for manufacture using flexible, low cost infusion technology.
The resulting clamp, which is 85% lighter than steel clamps and has improved corrosion resistance, was validated via extensive hydrostatic pressure testing including elevated temperature short and long term testing in water.
A subsequent field trial also took place on a gas pipeline in Malaysia.
The technology was also a recipient of a JEC Europe Innovation Award in the oil and gas category.
