🎉 Congratulations to Professor Murray Scott, ACS Australia Chairman, on becoming an Honorary Fellow of Engineers Australia (HonFIEAust), the highest credential within Engineers Australia membership.

Murray was recognised by his peers as an Honorary Fellow and was presented his certificate by President Raj Aseervatham at the 2024 Excellence Awards Gala Dinner, held at Brisbane City Hall on Thursday, 21 November. This recognition honours his remarkable contributions to the aerospace engineering profession, adherence to the highest technical and professional standards, and dedicated service to the Australian engineering community.

Murray joined Engineers Australia (EA) in 1977 as a student member during his Aeronautical Engineering studies at RMIT University. A highlight in his early career was the co-founding of the Australian International Aerospace Congress (AIAC) series in 1985. Held biennially alongside the Avalon International Airshow, the congress now attracts around 500 delegates and serves as a key platform for the aerospace industry.

Over the past  four decades, he has made significant contributions to the aerospace engineering field, and is still involved in supporting learned society activities, including as Chair of the Joint Board for Aerospace Engineering of EA and the Royal Aeronautical Society, as well as two global science and technology organisations: the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS) and the International Committee on Composite Materials (ICCM).

Murray’s professional career has been characterised by innovation in the design and manufacture of carbon fibre composite aerospace components. He led the Cooperative Research Centre for Advanced Composite Structures for 14 years, and in this time a range of key technologies and capabilities were developed, which played a pivotal role in securing Australia’s contribution to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner program. As the foundation Managing Director and now Chairman of ACS Australia, he continues to drive progress in advanced design and manufacturing. Some current highlights include research and development on Ultra-High Temperature Composites for hypersonic vehicles, and the Anduril Ghost Shark Extra Large Autonomous Undersea Vehicle (XL-AUV).

Reflecting on his appointment, Murray remarked:

“To be recognised as an Honorary Fellow of Engineers Australia is an absolute career highlight. It reflects not just my personal journey, but also the collective achievements of the aerospace engineering profession here in Australia and its critical role in developing world-leading composites technologies and capabilities. I am grateful for all of the support I have received and I remain committed to advancing engineering innovation well into the future.”
