This award recognizes transformative research and development in engineering lightweight composite azimuth arms, components in satellite communication systems. These systems serve aerospace, defense, and telecommunications, and effect many aspects of our daily lives.

EM Solutions commissioned ACS to enhance their satcom systems by replacing the existing metallic azimuth arms with a more efficient, lightweight composite solution. The result? A single-piece carbon-fibre design that achieved a remarkable 65 per cent mass reduction compared to the traditional multi-piece aluminium design, without compromising the performance demands of naval deployment.

Their innovative approach included rigorous validation through finite element analysis, ensuring the arms could withstand various load conditions, including the intense requirements of naval operations. These not only met but exceeded expectations, providing significant cost savings in assembly and materials, and simplifying installation for the end-user.

The King Cobra Maritime Satellite Terminal system supports critical military communications and is actively used on naval vessels, trusted by the Australian Border Force and the Royal Australian Navy.

Please join me in congratulating Advanced Composite Structures Australia for their outstanding contribution to composite technology and their role in enhancing global communication capabilities.”
